Report on Hamilton

1.   Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Father of America. Alexander became George Washington’s right-hand man in the Revolutionary War. He served as the Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton is also responsible for the American Finical System and he also created the newspaper called “The New York Post”

 Alexander Hamilton was born on The Caribbean Island; however, he was born to a poor family and was later orphaned. When Hamilton lived in America, they were having a Revolutionary War, which Alexander Hamilton wanted to fight in. Hamilton is an important figure because he founded America’s Financial System and he was obviously a founding father of America.

2.   The main characters in Hamilton are; Alexander Hamilton is the protagonist in the musical.

 Aaron Burr described as Alexander’s first friend when he came to America, even though they argue in the first act. Burr becomes so enraged that he challenges Hamilton to duel where he kills him.

Another character is Eliza Schuyler was from a very wealthy family Schuyler Family in New York; she was married to Alexander Hamilton. She was described as being reserved, trusting and kind.  Eliza honoured Alexander Hamilton memory by doing everything she thinks he would do.

 Angelica Schuyler was another main character; she is portrayed as an intelligent and witty social butterfly. Angelica fell in love Alexander Hamilton; however, she is obliged by her family to   marry someone who is rich. Therefore, she introduces Alexander to Eliza but she regrets it.

The themes in Hamilton are love, betrayal and ambition.

Ambition: Hamilton and Burr are the pure examples of ambition. Hamilton is ambitious to overcome his rough childhood and prove everyone wrong and that he is smart. Burr was ambitious to move his career, he also shows his ambition when he is running for a seat.

Love: Love is the main theme as Alexander, Eliza and Angelica are all caught in a love triangle. Angelica fell in love with Alexander but Eliza fell in with him as well. Therefore, instead of being selfish, Angelica introduced Eliza to Alexander and they get married.

Betrayal: Hamilton again is the pure example of betrayal as he has an affair with someone’s wife when Eliza was away with his son. What makes the betrayal worse was when he published all the letters he wrote to his mistress.

3.  The different technique used to tell the stories of “Hamilton” are through music, dance and mime. Hamilton is a sang-through musical. Music is the main way they tell the story.

Dance is used whenever they are singing a main song. For example in “Helpless”, they use dance throughout the musical number unless it was just Eliza and Hamilton on stage.

Music is obviously the main technique they use as it is a musical. However, this is not your usual musical as this is a sang-through musical that is very different from your normal musicals.

 Mime is used when they do not have the certain props they need. When the opening number “Alexander Hamilton” they used mime to show Hamilton’s childhood.


4.  The musical styles I heard in Hamilton are Hip-Hop, Pop, Rap, Soul and R&B however considering the cast are non-white actors this kind of style would have made sense so it can fit their voices with these type of genres.

Hamilton is Hip- Hop and Rap musical very different from your traditional musical so to other none musical styles like Soul, Pop and R&B was not a real surprise but it was quite refreshing.

5.    The Lion King and Hamilton are VERY DIFFERENT! The Lion King is based on an animated Disney film whilst Hamilton is based on Alexander Hamilton one of the founding father of America these are two very different musicals. The Lion King is told through speaking and song

Whereas Hamilton is sang-through; however, Lion King is also similar to Hamilton as they both have the theme of ambitious, love and betrayal.  

Lion King is about Simba running away from his past after his father dies in a stamped trying to save him. Simba eventually returns to fight for his rightful place on Pride Rock.

Hamilton is about Alexander Hamilton a founding father of America; who wants to fight in the American Revelation and he does. He also finds love along the way and marries Eliza Schuyler and has a son named Philip Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton earns his place in history by the end of the play.

6. The performances were outstanding in the production. However, an outstanding character for me was Angelica Schuyler; her performance when she was singing “Satisfied” because it was explaining why she did not take Alexander for herself.

This shows her love for Eliza over took everything that she feels for Alexander. The actor was outstanding as it showed every emotion she had which were love, passion, hurt and care she had for both Eliza and Alexander.


 7.  The audience were very responsive at different points in the musical. I remember the audience laughing when there were Morden time references like when fortnight dances and I remembered the audience were outraged when Hamilton cheated on Eliza.

Q&A

8.   I learned from the Q&A the skills that are required to be part of the production. These include; passion, energy, determination, acting skills, singing and dancing skills. Passion and energy are very important, as you have to love your craft and the show, which you do everyday this is where energy comes into play as you have to lot energy through rehearsal and the show. They also have to the skills to act, sing and dance.



9.  I found out that the challenges of working as a performer in the industry are it is very hard to find open auditions so you have to show up in hopes someone will notice you and get a role. It also tiring doing the same thing day in and out, so having that energy really helps.

 I found out that the main challenge to be in the industry is   that you have to be skilled in most areas of drama, dance and music.

I also discovered that having an agent is extremely important as they can help you get work. They also work with you to better your skills in order to more experience and more equip for whatever the industry throws at you.

10.  I found out that being a part of the Hamilton production that they are truly a family and they are always showing each other love. They also have the passion to do the thing they love the most, which is to perform. They all have a strong connection.

11.  The main message that Hamilton left the audience to think about is to tell you own story because no one else can. Another message they told is to never give up fighting in what you believe in. This is what made the audience think that to never give up fighting or believing in your dream.

12.  This information can help me approach my training as I now that being skilled in different aspect can help me progress. Also looking for work can be tough so showing up can also help you this shows you are passionate. In addition, you have to show the PASSION you have because maybe that will land you your dream role and in the industry.
